Ideas and inspiration, news and reviews, pictures and points of view – it's all right here in FOTB

Featured photographer: Nick Clark

As a boy Nick Clark loved taking pictures and then processing the film in the cupboard under the stairs. Years later, after a few false starts at other things, he got a place on a photography course. Soon after finishing his course, he moved to London and began working his way up the assisting ladder. He describes himself as very fortunate to have worked with some fantastic photographers, believing that each of these taught him something different, which he was then able to put together and add his own influence to.

"Photography is such a personal process of response and reaction to the world around us."

Commercially Nick’s work always involves people, be it working on film sets, or shooting a portrait for a magazine or for a design company. He sees each assignment as its own individual challenge to get exactly what he’s looking for. It’s also precisely this pressure that makes the results so rewarding for him.

Nick says, ‘Photography is such a personal process of response and reaction to the world around us. Be it portraiture for a magazine or grabbing an image when popping to the corner shop. I think that is why it’s so exciting.’

For Nick it’s important to, ‘Keep taking photographs simply for the love of doing it, and as a useful exercise in seeing. This helps to keep my mind fresh and affirms one’s own individual photographic view. It’s here that new ideas and inspirations for my work usually begin.’

This month's feature: Photographing fireworks

Make your photos as spectacular as the fireworks themselves

Get it right and photographs of fireworks can be really impressive. Shooting a dramatic black sky backdrop filled with dazzling colours will bring back special memories of a great night out in an instant. So to help you get the best results read our handy hints.

You can expect to be using slow shutter speeds of around 2 to10 seconds when photographing fireworks. And for such slow shutter speeds a tripod is a really important piece of kit as you won’t be able to keep your camera steady by simply hand holding your camera, which means you’ll end up with disappointingly blurry shots.

Photography tips

1. Capturing autumn

Low-angled autumn sunlight is perfect for picking out the texture of all those brightly coloured autumn leaves.

2. Shed some light

A reflector, or even a piece of white card, is an easy way to alter the amount of light falling onto your subject. This is particularly useful for portraits and still life shots.

3. Showing off shape

Back lighting is a great way to emphasis strong shapes and gives a really artistic feel to a photo.
