Desert Island Pics Winner
Well done to Elizabeth Halford, the winner of our Desert Island Pics 2009 competition. Lots of you sent us wonderful photos of the people and places that matter to you the most. Elizabeth Halford did the same with this beautiful shot, but it was her words that melted our hearts. She said, ‘This was the last photo I took of my daughter just days before she was struck with Rett's Syndrome. She can no longer prop up on her arms this way and has lost that longing gaze from her eyes.’ Elizabeth you’re a worthy winner, enjoy your £1500 holiday prize, you deserve it!
Renaissance Photography Prize 2010
As proud sponsors of the Renaissance Photography Prize for the third year running, we’re delighted to hear that this year’s competition entries have already raised £22,000 for the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care. This charity raises vital funds for young people suffering from breast cancer. Further money will be raised at a celebrity private view in April, which we’ll be printing photos for very soon. Take a look at their incredible online gallery it’s guaranteed to inspire your own photography.

If you feel like bagging yourself £5000 and showing off your photography skills you’ll be thrilled to know it’s time to enter the British Wildlife Photography Awards. There are ten main categories as well as two special awards aimed at young people and community groups. Take a look at their website for ideas on what the judges are looking for. The deadline for entries is 3rd June so you’ve got plenty of time to get snapping your award-winning shot.
Based upon their popular seminar by the same name, Experience Seminars have just produced a DVD entitled The Art of Light. As the name suggests, it’s all about learning to look at light from a photographer’s perspective. Covering a variety of different techniques it promises to give you a clearer idea of how to use light for maximum impact in your photos. Not bad for just £19.99!
You can’t turn the television on these days without being bombarded by comparison websites, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a camera comparison site. At Snapsort you won’t find any friendly meerkats but if you’re having trouble deciding which camera to buy, be it a digital SLR or a compact camera, this informative site is definitely well worth a look.
Events and exhibitions you won't want to miss
Penn portraits
The Irving Penn Portraits exhibition opens at London’s National Portrait Gallery on the 18th February. It promises to be packed full of stunning images from across his highly successful seven decades photography, include his truly groundbreaking work for Vogue during the 1940s. There are also plenty of famous faces including Pablo Picasso, Marlene Dietrich, Alfred Hitchcock and Christian Dior. All in all a very fitting tribute to a prolific photographer who died last year aged 92. Tickets cost £10 and exhibition runs until 6th June.
Photos are the perfect way to preserve the precious memories of your kids’ growing up. So be sure you’ve got plenty of great pictures you can enjoy looking back on for many years to come.
Rule number one has to be, keep your camera handy. Out of reach yes, but if it’s tucked away then by the time you’ve found it you’ll probably have missed the moment.

Frame it
Give your subject a natural frame such as shooting through a doorway or window that can act as a strong border to your photo.
Dappled sunlight
On a bright sunny day try photographing someone under the dappled light of a shady tree to give an interesting effect.
Dramatic backdrops
The right location can make all the difference to the feel of a portrait shot and even alter the mood entirely.
